Wiki Reorg Update: Dealing with Infrastructure

January 14, 2008 · 1 Comment

In trying to break up one wiki into 4 different wikis, I’ve had to deal with many things:

  • what URL do I use for the wikis?
  • where are the logos I need for them?
  • how do I implement some of the wiki functionality I’ve been reading about?

As you can see, these three questions are more infrastructure-related than content related, which gives you an idea of where my head has been over the last few weeks. Tackling content is one thing, but tackling the infrastructure is another.

My biggest issue with this whole project has been getting the configuration set up correctly. Because I had to go through our very overworked Systems Administrators, it was making for a very frustrating thing. I was not used to having to go through a middle-man to get these things changed. At home, if I need to make a change to a blog or website, I simply log in to CPanel and make the changes directly. Not at work. So determining first what needed to be changed, then sorting out how to change it, and then sending off the request to have the changes done would take anywhere from 5-10 business days. This was extremely frustrating.

However, as I noticed in my first post about this project, I was able to take advantage of a new Systems Administrator who was able to make all of the changes I required relatively quickly. Within 4 days he had completed all of the changes, so I was off and running!

I was able to deal with the three wikis that didn’t have content fairly quickly, or rather, I was able to clean them up quickly because they didn’t have any content in them. Before tackling the Beast of our Current Wiki, I thought I’d start coming up with some standards and procedures as well. Sure, I was procrastinating a bit, however it’s something I had to do anyways, so I figured it was a good a time as any.

Now the real work starts: creating templates for various page types; cleaning up the current wiki; and importing the information into the new wikis. That’s gonna be a lot of heavy lifting on my part, but that’s all right, I’ve got my chiropractor and massage therapist on speed dial.
